When God Writes in Generations

There is a kind of joy that only comes when you realize the story is bigger than you.

This week, that joy became tangible. My daughters, Mary and Ashley, each welcomed a baby girl into the world… Avila Mae and Lily Mae. As I watched them hold their newborns alongside the steady, loving presence of their husbands, Matt and Jeff, something settled deep within me.
This was not just a moment. It was a continuation.
Mary is already the mother of our three grandsons, Christopher, Jonathan, and Augustino, and now she holds her daughter, Avila Mae, with the same steady love she’s learned through years of motherhood, shared and strengthened by Matt, a father who leads with quiet faithfulness. Ashley, too, now joins her sister in that sacred circle, cradling Lily Mae, learning the quiet language that only parents and newborns seem to understand, with Jeff by her side, stepping into fatherhood with humility and resolve.
And then there is our other daughter, Lizzie, already walking this road, raising her own little girl, Indie Mae, who is turning one. Watching Lizzie and her husband, Matt, parent together has been another reminder that God doesn’t just give children, He weaves families, partnership, and legacy together in ways far deeper than we can plan.
Each child. Each grandchild. Each son-in-law I love deeply.
Another line written in the story God is telling through our family.
Psalm 127:3 tells us, “Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.” I’ve always believed that, but watching your children become parents gives that verse a new weight. You realize the reward isn’t just the child, it’s the privilege of seeing love passed on, strengthened, and stewarded by the next generation.
In Ink from Heaven’s Pen, I write about how our lives are not accidental. They are authored. Every chapter is shaped with intention. Standing beside hospital beds and holding tiny hands this week, I was reminded again that God writes in generations. “One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts” (Psalm 145:4). Faith was never meant to stop with us. It is meant to be handed down, lived out, and rewritten in new lives.
There is something humbling about watching your children write chapters with God you can no longer control. You realize that parenting, and now grandparenting, is an act of surrender. You taught everything you could. You prayed more than you knew how. And now you trust the Author to finish what He began.
Avila Mae. Lily Mae. Indie Mae. Three little girls growing up alongside brothers and cousins, Christopher, Jonathan, and Augustino, and stories yet untold, along with children we’ve yet to dream about but God has already planned. They remind me that God’s ink doesn’t fade; it multiplies. Each life carries echoes of prayers whispered long before they took their first breath.
Psalm 138:8 says, “The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me.” I believe that promise now stretches further than I ever imagined. It reaches beyond my own life and into the arms of my grandchildren.
Sometimes the greatest blessing is not seeing how your story ends, but realizing God is still writing it long after you thought your chapter was complete.

If you’ve ever wondered how God might be writing a story that reaches beyond your own lifetime, Ink from Heaven’s Pen is an invitation to reflect on the faith, love, and legacy He is quietly weaving through generations, yours included.
