The Laughter that Changed Checkout

My daughter Ashley sent this picture to our family group chat along with the story behind it.

And honestly, the story somehow makes the smile even more beautiful.

She was standing in Target when it happened: a full-blown poopy diaper disaster.

Not the manageable kind.

The kind every parent instantly recognizes as an emergency situation.

Ashley quickly grabbed Lily Mae and headed to the family bathroom.

She completely undressed her, ready to clean up the situation… only to discover the extra diaper she had brought was too small.

So she did what every parent has done at some point:

“Well … this has to work until we get home.”

She got Lily Mae cleaned up, dressed her in the too-small diaper, and headed to the car, hoping it would hold together long enough to make it home.

And then came the surprise.

When Ashley placed Lily Mae in the car seat, she suddenly noticed a huge bag of diapers already sitting in the car.

Not just diapers.

The right size diapers.

Provision had already been there.

She just hadn’t realized it yet.

Isn’t that often how God works?

Before we even know what we’ll need, He has already gone ahead of us.

Philippians 4:19 reminds us of this truth:

“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”

And somehow, the timing became even more perfect.

Because as soon as Ashley got home and changed Lily Mae into the correct diaper ... another blowout was already on the way.

God’s provision had arrived before the next mess ever did.

But what makes this story unforgettable is Lily Mae’s response through all of it.

Because while Ashley was navigating the chaos …

Lily Mae was laughing.

Not fussing.

Not crying.

Not uncomfortable.

Laughing from deep in her little belly.

The kind of joy that spills out so freely it changes the atmosphere around everyone nearby.

And suddenly the moment shifted.

The frustration softened.

The panic loosened its grip.

The mood changed in the middle of the mess.

Not because the situation disappeared … but because joy entered the atmosphere at the checkout.

Looking at that picture, I couldn’t help but think about how powerful our response can be in difficult moments.

Some people carry panic into a room.

Others carry peace.

Some spread tension.

Others spread joy.

And often, the spirit we carry affects everyone around us.

Proverbs 17:22 tells us “A joyful heart is good medicine…”

What if joy is not found in the absence of messy situations … but in the presence of trust inside them?

Children seem to understand this naturally.

Lily Mae wasn’t worried about the problem because she trusted the one carrying her.

And maybe that’s part of what Jesus meant when He said:

“Unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” — Matthew 18:3

Children trust.

Children stay present.

Children laugh while adults are panicking.

Meanwhile, we often allow inconvenience to steal our peace immediately.

A delayed answer.

A frustrating interruption.

A moment we didn’t expect.

A mess we didn’t plan for.

Yet Scripture reminds us in 1 Peter 5:7:

“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.”

Ashley prayed.

God had already provided.

And Lily Mae laughed right in the middle of Target.

There’s a sermon in that.

And honestly, on Mother’s Day, this picture feels even more meaningful.

Because behind every smiling child is often a tired mom carrying far more than anyone realizes.

Mothers clean messes no one applauds.

They solve problems in real time.

They pray quiet prayers in store bathrooms, parking lots, kitchens, and late-night bedrooms.

And somehow, by the grace of God, they keep loving, serving, laughing, and showing up anyway.

Ashley probably didn’t realize she was living out something sacred in that Target moment.

But she was.

Because motherhood is often found in the unseen moments:

the stressful interruptions,

the inconvenient messes,

the quick prayers,

the faithful perseverance,

and the deep love that keeps carrying others forward.

So today, to every mom who feels exhausted, unseen, stretched thin, or overwhelmed:

God sees you.

And maybe that’s part of what Heaven was reminding us through this ordinary Target moment:

God is not absent in our messes. He is already providing in ways we simply haven’t noticed yet.

And sometimes the most powerful witness in the middle of chaos … is a spirit filled with joy anyway.

Even at the checkout in Target.

Even in the mess.

Even before the situation is resolved.

Because joy has a way of changing the “checkout” for everyone around us.
