She Thought He Was the Gardener . . .

It was still early.

The kind of early where grief feels heavier because the world hasn’t quite woken up yet. The air is quiet. The questions are loud.

Mary Magdalene stood outside the tomb, weeping.

Everything she believed would happen … didn’t. Everything she hoped for… felt buried.

And then, He was there.

Not in the way she expected. Not in the way she would have recognized.

“Woman,” He said gently, “why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” John 20:15

She thought He was the gardener.

Isn’t that how it often is for us?

We come searching … carrying questions, disappointments, and unmet expectations. We’re looking for Jesus, but sometimes He doesn’t look like we thought He would in that moment. So we miss Him … even when He’s standing right in front of us.

Until …“Mary.”

One word. Her name. And everything changed.

“Rabboni!” John 20:16

In an instant, sorrow turned to recognition. Loss gave way to life. What felt finished was only just beginning.

But Mary wasn’t the only one.

Behind locked doors, the disciples sat in fear.

Confused. Disoriented. Unsure what came next.

And then Jesus came and stood among them.

“Peace be with you.” John 20:19

Not correction.

Not disappointment.

Peace.

The very ones who ran … the ones who hid … the ones who weren’t there when it mattered most, He came to them.

Just like He comes to us.

And then there was Peter.

The one who said, “I don’t know Him.”

The one carrying the weight of failure … replaying the moment over and over.

So what does Jesus do?

He meets him … not with shame, but with a question.

“Do you love Me?” John 21:15

Three times.

Not to remind Peter of his failure … but to restore him through love.

And what’s even more striking, Jesus had already sent word ahead:

“Go, tell His disciples and Peter…” Mark 16:7

Even in Peter’s failure, Jesus made sure he knew he was still seen, still called, still not counted out.

Because that’s what resurrection does.

It doesn’t just prove Jesus is alive, it shows us He still comes close to the broken, the doubting, and the disappointed.

Easter isn’t just a moment to remember.

It’s an invitation to encounter.

The same Jesus who stood before Mary, who walked into locked rooms, who met Peter on the shore, stands before us today, alive, present, and calling our name.

But here’s the question:

Are we still seeking Him?

“You will seek Me and find Me, when you seek Me with all your heart.” Jeremiah 29:13

Not casually. Not occasionally. But fully.

Because the truth is, many of us know about the resurrection… but we aren’t living in the reality of it.

We carry stress, fear, control, and uncertainty as if the stone is still in place.

But it’s not.

“He is not here; He has risen, just as He said.” Matthew 28:6

And because He has risen…

  • Death is not the end.

  • Hope is not fragile.

  • Failure is not final.

  • Your story is not finished.

Mary didn’t recognize Jesus until she lingered long enough to hear His voice.

The disciples didn’t believe until He stood in the room and showed them His hands and side. John 20:20

Peter didn’t just get forgiven; he was recommissioned, sent forward with purpose: “Feed My sheep.” John 21:17

What if we’re missing moments with Him, not because He isn’t near, but because we’re not staying?

Not slowing.

Not seeking.

“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” James 4:8

The resurrection means we don’t just follow a memory, we walk with a living Savior.

Right now.

In your ordinary moments.

In your unanswered questions.

In your quiet mornings.

He is there.

And when we seek Him… truly seek Him… we begin to experience Him in new ways.

Not just as Savior but as Shepherd.

Not just as King but as close.

Not just as risen but as present.

Imagine this:

The same voice that spoke “Mary,” that said “Peace be with you," that called Peter back …

Is speaking your name.

Calling you, not just to believe in Him … but to trust Him.

With your life.

With your future.

With the parts of your story that don’t yet make sense.

“Because I live, you also will live.” John 14:19

That’s the promise of Easter.

Not just life after death, but life right now. Full. Free. Anchored in Him.

Not out of obligation but out of longing.

Not just for answers but for Him.

Because when you do … you may just discover He’s been closer than you thought.

Standing in your garden.

Walking into your fear.

Meeting you in your failure.

And when He speaks your name, everything changes.
